MILK

Milwaukee Indy Local Comics Fest 2023.

I haven’t tabled in a while, since before the pandemic actually. I was excited to finally get the chance to break out all of the display stuff I created last time I tabled back before 2019.

The show was a blast! I got to talk to so many comics fans and creators; best of all, I finally ran into someone who played Nethack!

I look forwards to applying next year.

Python Cheat Sheet Progress

If you want to master something, teach it. The more you teach, the better you learn. Teaching is a powerful tool to learning.

Richard Feynman

Well, I tend to write programs once in awhile, but not enough to keep all of the basic syntax stuff in my head. I’ve been meaning to construct a cheat sheet of some sort so that I don’t have to keep googling for really basic stuff while I get my footing again. I’m finding that writing the cheat sheet is a better refresher exercise than my normal mode where I spend a few weeks going through a bunch of rudimentary toy programs. I’ve got a long way to go — and I need to figure out a way to laminate three 8.5” x 11” sheets into some sort of tri-fold, but this is a start.

Project Notes

First off, let me start with the traditional artist blog post introduction — Its been a bit since I’ve posted any updates to this sketchbook. But, Just because I haven’t been posting here does not mean that my pencil, or in this case, my stylus hasn’t been moving.

So far, I’ve finished 3 short comics that I hope to add my collection here. I’m working trying to focus on finishing comics that I’ve created. I have spent nearly every morning since 2015 (when I started trying to draw at least one sketch for a comic everyday) stacking up ideas and now I’m working on refining my process of completing them.

The Sun’s Waking up

I became a licensed ham a few years ago. As is my luck, I got licensed right at the end of the previous solar cycle. What’s the solar cycle, you might ask?

The sun operates on an 11 year cycle. During this cycle, there is a period of increased solar activity and a period of dormancy. During the active period, the sun lets of solar flairs and the surface is covered in sun-spots. When the sun is active, the material that the sun lets off charges the ionosphere — which is awesome because you can bounce radio signals off of a charged ionosphere.

We’re just at the start of the next solar cycle. Last week, the sun left off a few CME’s which caused radio black outs at first, but charged the ionosphere enough to improve its ability to bounce radio waves. Upon hearing this, I had to dig out my shortwave radio and give it a try. My radio has a max power of 100 watts. I was running at 50 watts, which is overkill for a weak signal mode such as FT-8.

All of the blue balloons on the map showing times are marking where I was heard by other Amateur stations running the FT-8 software.

Not too bad. There are nights where my signals barely even make the coasts of the US.

This map was generated by PSK reporter. You can enter callsigns and it will show you if it’s heard them. If your looking for more information on current space weather conditions, look no further than spaceweather.com.

currently working on curating a list of comic creator resources, so I’d you have leads, I’d love to add them to the list.

Isometric Computer Illustrations

I carry around a folder filled with templates for drawing comics and most of the time, when I have a few minutes, I reach for one of those. But, in the same folder I also carry around a few sheets of isomeric grid paper as well —

I miss the days when the internet was something you had to connect to. Each computer seemed like it’s own island.
